An Interview with Albert Jaskula

jaskula

Albert Jaskula is the author of the novel The Fall. He never imagined he could write a book after living in London for nearly a decade. Working as an assistant manager and then as a driver gave him plenty of time to contemplate and write down ideas for something unique. The plot evolved over time until it came together as a cohesive whole. His writing career began in a very unusual way. When he became a co-author of a children’s book (which has yet to be published), he realised what a joy it was to write. He soon realised that children were not his intended target. His writing style, gloom, and unusual sense of comedy are aimed at a more mature audience.

Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

Finding the ideal title for my book was simple. I wanted the title to convey the essence of the story I was trying to communicate.

How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?

I couldn’t select between numerous cover options. My friends and family assisted me in choosing a cover. It turned out to be a great shot, and fans adored the choice.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

I’ve had stories to tell in my thoughts for a while. The concept developed in me until I composed the prologue. What ensued was a five-month journey of writing and dedicating every free moment to finishing what I had started. Modern noir cinema has undoubtedly had an impression on me, and I have opted to stay true to the genre.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

I’ve spent the last ten years working in distribution and logistics management. But I recently chose to advance my career in a more exciting subject, so I began training as an engineer.

What was the most rewarding/meaningful part of publishing your book?

Converting a rough manuscript into a book. This was the most gratifying. Then followed the feedback from people who liked the story and understood what I was trying to convey with the book.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

It may be difficult to believe, but the entire novel was written using one track. I’ve listened to it more than 18,000 times. I’ve included a few titles in the book, but the primary theme music is from Max Payne 2 in a rainy mood.

1. Max Payne 2 Main Theme

2. Frank Sinatra – “My Way”

3. Johnny Cash – “Hurt”

4. Frank Sinatra – “I’m a Fool to Want You”

What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?

I sought to depict a problem that affects guys. A strong, independent man attempting to cope alone with the sadness of losing loved ones. It is not handed to you on a silver platter, but it is about men’s mental health and the consequences of disregarding it. If anyone can take a lesson from this book or help him with his troubles and the pain he is attempting to hide from the public. I’ll feel proud and happy with myself.

What new writing projects are you currently working on? Or, other projects that are not writing?

The next project is a second book chronicling Ariel Fall’s exploits. The Fallen. When will it be available to buy? It is up to the readers if they wish to see a sequel at all.

How was working with Atmosphere Press? What would you tell other writers who want to publish?

They are a group of talented individuals who are eager to assist you reach your goals. They have always been supportive of my efforts to turn the draft into a book. Your book. One to be proud of.
