An Author’s Odyssey: An Interview with I.D.G. Curry, author of Fall of Immortals

Curry 1

I.D.G. Curry is a fiction novelist who was compelled to bring what started as a dream into an entire universe of characters that interact and intertwine with the mythology he loves. He believes that fiction, folklore, and myths are the true essences of storytelling which open the reader’s mind to what could be possible or even what the truth might actually be. Curry aims to collide the world we live in with centuries of mankind’s imagination, even scattering elements from his own life into the journey. Fall of Immortals is the journey’s beginning.

Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

The first title was actually supposed to be godsGrave but while I was trying to create the spaces for my book on social media, I discovered a book with the name and an already established series. It took me a while to replace it because there is symbolism throughout the book, including inside the title. I needed a title that could deliver that same desire while meeting all the other requirements I had set for the book which will establish consistency for the series. So I picked the new title because not only is it unique, it also begs the question: who or what is the Shogun of the Heavens? To find out, you will have to join us on our journey beside the League of Pagulane.

How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?

It was as if I was holding a newborn or watching an egg hatch in the palm of my hand. Especially as my first book, looking at what started out as just pages from my imagination manifest itself into hundreds of pages worth of story is an incredible feeling of accomplishment and completion. It gives you as an author the confidence to not only continue but to venture out into other genres and stories.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

For a long time, it was where I would drift off in the leisure time of thought as an escape from the world I was already living in. It was very turbulent at the time. Over time the story expanded and eventually became too massive to keep in my head, especially organized. As I talked more and more about it to friends and peers, I felt a compulsion to write.

Now, each time I finish a title, my fingers ache to produce another. Honestly, it is going to be harder to take breaks from writing than the creative writing itself.

What was the most rewarding/meaningful part of publishing your book?

Taking the risk and investing time into something that I did not know for sure would be welcomed or accepted into the world, and then producing it directly from mind into reality is a reward that cannot compare to any other.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

Untamable by Hidden Citizens would be my outro for each chapter and Runnin by Def Mor would be my intro for each chapter in the first book. There is a list of other soundtracks, though I would like to speak to a production team about making this thrilling fiction into an animated series.

What new writing projects are you currently working on? Or, other projects that are not writing?

Currently, Shogun of the Heavens is my focus until its completion. At a certain point in the saga, I may take a break to write other stories, though this is a world that has great potential for expansion. I expect it to keep me very busy in the upcoming years.

How was working with Atmosphere Press? What would you tell other writers who want to publish?

It was everything I could have asked for as a new author. Atmosphere Press advised me well, presented options and allowed me to pick. I believe as authors themselves, they take the experiences they have had and remove the needless obstacles that many writers sometimes face, providing an almost seamless experience for their authors as they transition.
