Leslie Cieplechowicz is a photographer who developed her craft by working the streets of Detroit as a paramedic and shooting old, historical buildings she found on her runs. Her love of creating unique imagery led her across the state, then the United States, then globally, where she currently finished shooting in the country of Cuba, documenting its lively culture, friendly people, and classic automobiles. She currently works as an instructor after leaving the road and spreads her love of photography to her students.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?
My mom, who was an artist, was a big influence. She always believed in my work. My book is dedicated to her and my dad.
What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?
I have been a paramedic for 20 years. I worked on the road at Detroit EMS, in an ER, and in a drug detox clinic. My time on the road was inspiration for Detroit Revealed.
How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?
I was so excited to hold my book in my hands. I have been an avid reader since I was little, would always check out an armload of books at the library every week, and it was awesome to have my own. I was also thrilled to see my book at Barnes and Noble, my favorite store.
If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?
Aretha Franklin, “Respect,” Martha and the Vandellas, “Dancing in the Streets,” and the Temptations, “My Girl,” all Motown hits.
What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?
I would like the readers to take away that Detroit is a terrific city to explore. It sometimes has a bad reputation with people as being unapproachable, but there are great places located throughout. One just has to give it a chance.
What new writing projects are you currently working on? Or, other projects that are not writing?
I have one book coming in 2024, Michigan Revealed: Exploring the Mitten’s Thumb. I am working on two more, Detroit Revealed: Another Look at the Motor City and Michigan Revealed: The Wilds of the Upper Peninsula.
