Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?
I have had quite a few influences throughout my life. Growing up, I loved to read and enjoyed series such as Famous Five. I also adored the books Professor P and the Jurassic Coast as well as Lost Island of Tamarind. I never lost my love of reading and along the way I wanted to bring that joy and wonder to others through my own work.
What inspired you to start writing this book?
I had the idea to write a book many years ago but lacked the drive and commitment to finish it. My family and close friends have been a massive support and kept pushing me to finish the book, my mum especially couldn’t wait to read it! When I found my editor, she was the one that gave me the biggest push to get going. All of them were my inspiration.
Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?
The title, World of Ruin, was the easiest part for me. That came to me straight away as I knew that I wanted the world to be in despair and recovering from a war.
If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?
Oh, a very good question. I took heavy inspiration from my all-time favourite films, The Pirates of the Caribbean. I believe the fast-paced and characteristic soundtracks from there would fit right in! Also the game The Assassins Creed! The sneaking around without getting caught and the secret planning suits very well. The music from here would definitely be a great fit.
Describe your dream book cover.
Something that instantly captures people’s attention. They know the genre straight away but it leaves them asking more questions and wanting to dive into the book to find out.
What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?
I actually run my own business, working full-time as a dog trainer and walker! I own an online bookstore—I’m a busy girl.
What books did you read (for research or comfort) throughout your writing process?
I read books that I wanted my own to be similar to in respect to vibe and essence. The Ever King was a big one, as was When the Moon Hatched. I started to reread the Throne of Glass series as well.
What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?
Just to have enjoyed reading, getting fully immersed into the story, and coming up with their own wild theories about certain ties. Creating fan art and having a love for the worlds I have created. There are also messages within about self-love and valuing friendship and family, etc. I would love that to portray across well.
