Making it, by Kevin Drevik

Seventeen-year-old Chris Duncan has never had much, but his grandmother has always kept the family together. When she dies unexpectedly, Chris, his mother, and his younger sister are left without the person who managed their home, their money, and nearly every part of their lives.

As unpaid bills mount, Chris takes his first job and begins learning the lessons school never taught him: how to budget a paycheck, understand debt, choose workplace benefits, and plan for the future. But when his family loses its home, he must grow up faster than he ever imagined.

Set in rural Kentucky, Making It is a hopeful coming-of-age story about grief, financial responsibility, and the difficult first steps toward independence. For Chris, becoming an adult means more than earning money—it means discovering what he is capable of when others are counting on him.
