The illustration timeline
Illustration runs in four phases across about twelve weeks. Each phase begins only once you’ve approved the one before it, so the schedule assumes prompt feedback at each hand-off.
Weeks 1-2
Character Design
Your illustrator sketches several interpretations of your key characters along with a few overall style options, so the look of the book is settled before any final art begins. These sketches are deliberately unfinished — they exist to test ideas.
Weeks 3-5
Storyboarding
Every page gets a sketch, and the sketches are laid out in story order so you can see the whole book flow. Your illustrator shares these with you regularly, and nothing moves ahead until you approve the sequence.
Weeks 6-8
Rough Composition
The approved storyboard becomes near-final artwork. This is the stage for changes: you get up to two revisions per image, and anything beyond that is billed at the additional-image rate.
Weeks 9-12
Final Illustrations
Finished art arrives in batches every one to two weeks so you can review as it lands, along with your front and back cover design. Files are delivered in PDF or whatever format Atmosphere needs for production.
