An Interview with Rebecca Cartwright

Rebecca (Becky) Cartwright is a nursery practitioner and primary school teacher in Warwickshire, England, and mum to Grace with a baby on the way.

Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

I knew it straight away! As a teacher, I taught a young boy called Noah in my first class, and he stayed with me. In fact, all the characters in the book are named after children in my first class!

How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?

So proud—all I really wanted was that book on my shelf. It was also amazing to see the illustrations come to life.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

I have wanted to write since I was a young girl and always spent lots of time writing stories.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

I have worked in mental health and teaching. I love both and want to find a way to combine all the jobs I’ve ever had!

What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?

I want children to read the book and realise that in a competitive, critical, and high-paced world, slowing down and being kind is most important. Sometimes the basics matter most.

What creative projects are you currently working on?

I have two more books in the pipeline! Keep an eye out.

How was working with Atmosphere Press? What would you tell other writers who want to publish?

Atmosphere Press was very helpful, always responding to my queries.
