What inspired you to start writing this book?
I work in the mental health field and a patient’s difficulty with managing their symptoms inspired a short story; the world of SPKS grew from there, informed by my ongoing forensic work.
Tell us the story of your book’s current title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?
The titles are always easiest. It’s comedy that’s hard.
If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?
All of my books include musical references throughout, but Deception included circus-based songs.
What books are you reading (for research or comfort) as you continue the writing process?
Mysteries, Sherlock Holmes, Manson trial transcripts.
What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?
I am a leading expert on anxiety disorders and trauma in my professional life.
Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?
My work with patients and inmates shapes much of what I write.
Where is your favorite place to write?
In my office.
What advice would you give your past self at the start of your writing journey?
Who needs sleep?
What’s one thing you hope sticks with readers after they finish your book?
People with mental health issues are just people, and we all need to feel a sense of inclusion, warts and all.
