Dylan is a paranormal and psychological fiction author whose work centers on grief, intimacy, and the lingering presence of the supernatural. They are the author of Most Lovely Words and the Possessed series, exploring the ways love and horror often speak the same language.
What inspired you to start writing this book?
In 2020, when talking to one of my author friends, she wrote a book about making a bucket list and living life to the fullest. As I sat in awe, I realized that books with humanity and feeling, with a not-so-happy but real middle and a bittersweet ending, was something we need more of! And so, I say down and penned Most Lovely Words!
Tell us the story of your book’s current title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?
The title, Most Lovely Words, was the easiest book title I’ve come up with! When I was writing my other books, like the Possessed books and The Ravens Burden, coming up with a title for them was a long process that I put off while writing the books! But with MLW, it was the first thing I did.
Describe your dream book cover.
My dream book cover would probably be embossed flowers with shadowy figures in the background holding hands!
If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?
I actually have a playlist on Spotify that someone made for me, and it has songs like Not About Angels, Saturn, and Chasing Cars!
What books are you reading (for research or comfort) as you continue the writing process?
Right now, I’m reading the mediator series to help me with the new book I’m working on called The Ravens Burden!
What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?
I’ve been lots of things! From a house cleaner to a cashier, and now a barista!
Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?
The biggest inspiration for me to start writing has always been the authors that I read growing up! I always read them and thought, one day I want to be able to do that!
Where is your favorite place to write?
In my living room, during a thunderstorm!
What advice would you give your past self at the start of your writing journey?
Please don’t ever give up, keep going, and don’t lose sight of who you are and why you’re doing this.
What’s one thing you hope sticks with readers after they finish your book?
Mortality, life, death, and the world around us is scary, but with the right people, maybe it doesn’t have to be SO bad; you might just find love and friends and happiness when you least expect it.
