An Interview with Cynthia Cook

I’m the author of two nonfiction books, What Really Happened to the Hat and the Gloves, and What Really Happened to Marion and Candace.

Tell us the story of your book’s title.

It’s the name of a fictional hotel near Seattle.

How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?

I love both of my book covers designed by Ronaldo Alves, so I can’t wait to see this one.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

I’m writing about my sister’s Alzheimer’s journey. I’m influenced by Stephen King’s writing, especially The Answer Man, from You Like It Darker.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

I’m an advanced master gardener. I recently retired from our family business, which was property management.

What was the most rewarding/meaningful part of publishing your book?

I always find the process rewarding, but I liked having the opportunity to tell my story beginning when our second child was born.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

Hotel California by the Eagles, and Shelter From The Storm by Bob Dylan.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?

My perfect reader enjoys stories about real people dealing with complex issues including being a caregiver to family members with Alzheimer’s disease.

What creative projects are you currently working on?

I’m writing a true crime story about the 1997 swarming death of BC teenager Reena Virk. I also write a weekly newsletter.

How was working with Atmosphere Press? What would you tell other writers who want to publish?

I have really enjoyed working with my editor Colleen Alles, and book cover designer Ronaldo Alves. I appreciate the support of my whole team at Atmosphere Press!
