I am a multi-genre author who specialises in books covering hard-hitting topics such as abduction and abuse survivors’ stories. My first novel (My Life in His Hands) became an Amazon bestseller back in 2017, selling over 250,00 copies worldwide and over 4.3 million page reads on Kindle.
I have recently won two awards for book to screen adaptation with The White Rose International Film Festival.
What inspired you to start writing this book?
I had a horrific past and originally, I started writing this book to help make sense of my past and ultimately heal myself by getting to book out of me, then I soon realised how powerful it would be as a book and published it to help other survivors. Everyone has a story in them I was just brave enough to share mine with the world.
Tell us the story of your book’s current title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?
I made an off the cuff comment when I was around seventeen years old and said if I ever wrote a book, I would title it, My Life in His Hands, because at the time my evil father controlled everything about my life and it was how I felt at the time. Fifteen years later, I kept that title and am so glad I did.
Describe your dream book cover.
My dream cover would be something that inspires me to read it, whether that is shock factor or just pure curiosity, it needs to capture my attention, because we all judge a book by its cover.
If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?
I’ve always said Mad World would be the perfect track for my book, hands down, as the song captures the essence of my story.
What books are you reading (for research or comfort) as you continue the writing process?
I haven’t had much time to read as I am always writing or helping other indie authors, but I did receive Sarah J. Maas’s complete Throne of Glass box set so plan to start that soon.
What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?
I used to be a model and have been on the front of magazines in the past, and I was in a band when I was younger.
Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?
I read A Child Called It, and that book inspired me to write about my own horrific past.
Where is your favorite place to write?
I have a desk in my back hallway which has become my place to write, but before having my little boy I would choose to write outdoors, somewhere with nature with maybe a stream or river in sight.
What advice would you give your past self at the start of your writing journey?
You will inspire more people than you know, so don’t give up.
What’s one thing you hope sticks with readers after they finish your book?
Damn, if she can go through all that and come out the other side, then so can I…a line I have heard a lot over the years.
