An Interview with S.K. Fields

S.K. Fields was born in Yorkshire and has lived a life shaped by contrasts – from bustling cities to quaint villages and a rural community deep in the countryside.

With a background in healthcare and personal experience living with a chronic physical injury, S.K. Fields draws upon a wealth of personal insight in her writing. She possesses a remarkable ability to uncover beauty and meaning amid life’s hardships.

Inspired by a deep love for nature, this book pays tribute to women who have endured hardship yet continue to meet each day with courage and hope.

What inspired you to start writing this book?

The inspiration for writing this book came from a mixture of sources. For years, I had been painting idyllic landscapes – mountains, lakes, and vast green meadows – which eventually became the setting for the story. I also wanted to create a place where women could feel safe, happy, and free from the challenges they face in society.

When I began writing, there was no clear plan for the plot or for how wise and courageous the characters would become. I simply started with a character named Tara and a setting that felt both real and authentic to me. I have always loved nature, and one day, while walking through it, I felt such a strong presence and a deep understanding of its significance in our lives and in the world. I wanted to share that feeling with others and create a place that could be a blessing to those struggling with the increasing complexity of modern life.

The writing process began as a source of comfort during a difficult time. I discovered that the more I struggled, the more I was able to write – and the more the story unfolded in ways that were both meaningful and healing.

Tell us the story of your book’s current title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

The title was the easiest and most natural part of the process – it simply came to me, and I knew it was right.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

For the story, the perfect soundtracks would be Read All About It by Emeli Sandé, and Orinoco Flow or Caribbean Blue by Enya – music that captures both emotion and the serene, magical beauty of mountains, lakes, and trees.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

I’ve been inspired by women who are changemakers – those who challenge the world with courage and vision. Powerful figures like Virginia Woolf embody that strength, and their example reminds me of the kind of boldness and clarity I want to bring to my own work. My grandmother used to praise my writing when I was young, and seeing her face light up as she read my stories is something that has always stayed with me.

What advice would you give your past self at the start of your writing journey?

I would tell my past self to trust the process and take all the breaks needed – the story will reveal itself in its own time. I’d remind myself that life’s challenges can fuel creativity, and that it’s okay not to have a plan. Most importantly, I’d say: Don’t give up.

What’s one thing you hope sticks with readers after they finish your book?

I hope readers carry with them the understanding that as women heal – finding strength, wisdom, and courage – the world heals a little bit too.
