An Interview with Rene Rodriguez III

Rene lives in Central Texas, works as a solution engineer, and is an avid reader of literary fiction with underlying dark themes. He regularly goes kayaking and mountain biking. He also loves live music and traveling.

Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

It took an afternoon to come up since I had already written the manuscript.

How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?

I was pleased to hold my proof copy paperback. The original goal was simply to get a book completed and out in the world.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

I was inspired by the writing of Ernst Junger, particularly On the Marble Cliffs. I was also heavily inspired by Cursed Images by Reuben Dendinger.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

I have only worked in IT, but would rather be working in publishing, library, or a museum.

What was the most rewarding/meaningful part of publishing your book?

The best part of publishing the book was momentum. I now have a lot more confidence to continue writing stories and I also have a better understanding of how publishing works.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

I actually included a lot of references in the book itself.

Idioteque – Radiohead

SICKO – HEALTH featuring Godflesh

Reminiscence – Olafur Arnalds and Alice Sara Ott

What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?

I would just want my readers to have fun with the stories and hopefully pull some emotions out of them. Good or bad.

What creative projects are you currently working on?

I would like to begin a novel soon.

How was working with Atmosphere Press? What would you tell other writers who want to publish?

I learned a lot from working with Atmosphere. The best part was the developmental editing process with Jonathon Smith. I would say this press is perfect for your first book.
