Under the Surface, by Harriet Melrose

Once upon a time, Fatima was well-adjusted, cool, and effortlessly popular… Not anymore!

She’s stuck in dark, cold, and miserable Scotland with her grandfather, who won’t wear his hearing aids, and her new (read: ‘only’) best mate, Sophie, the dog. Dumped by her father, supposed to be learning about the country she was born in, Fatima feels like an alien. And that’s before developers start ripping up the woodland, mad old ladies start grinning at her on the bus, and something starts moving around in the graveyard at night.

Fatima used to think she knew who she was…but maybe that isn’t who she is at all. Something—somethings—calling themselves the Seelie are coming out of hiding, crows and rats are acting weird, and a pink-haired weirdo kid from school seems to know something Fatima most definitely doesn’t know and doesn’t want to. But as Roane and selkies, school bullies and journalists, migrant workers, a boy called Mark, Sophie the dog, and (aargh!) Fatima’s deaf and terminally uncool grandfather get pulled into the weirdness, maybe Fatima doesn’t have a choice anymore.

All she needs to do is decide which side she should be on.

No pressure…
