An Interview with Cynthia Cook

My first written work was in market research, in engineering and sales. I have written many papers on subjects including Taxonomy, Entomology, Plant Diseases, and Landscaping as an Advanced Master Gardener at VanDusen, Vancouver. What Really Happened to the Hat and the Gloves is my first nonfiction novella. I have written from personal experience about the impact Alzheimer’s can have on the person affected, their closest relatives, and caregivers.

Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

This is a true story about what should have been a time of familial support, which turned into a maelstrom of accusations and betrayal. During a visit from Marion’s sister and her husband, a beloved hat was mysteriously mutilated. A framed pair of handbeaded gloves, which were designed by Marion and Candace’s maternal grandmother was taken home by Candace and her husband, with Marion’s permission. More than two months later, Candace learned that Marion was accusing her sister of elder abuse, for taking the gloves under false pretences. My unflinching narrative forced the reader to confront the question: In a family torn apart by illness and suspicion, can the truth ever really be known? And more importantly, can forgiveness find a way?

How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?

It was a satisfying, and wonderful experience!

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

I wanted to help people who might find themselves in the same situation as me;being isolated from the family member who they wanted to help, without a hidden agenda. I wanted people to know that they’re not alone, and that support is available through the Alzheimer’s Society.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

My degree is a Bachelor of Commerce, in Market Research. I’m still the CEO of our family business, which is property management. I do volunteer work as an Advanced Master Gardener at VanDusen, Vancouver.

What was the most rewarding/meaningful part of publishing your book?

It was satisfying to get my side of the story out, because I know that it has already helped some people.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

“Disintegration” by The Cure

“Happy House” by Siouxsie and the Banshees

“What Do You Mean” by Justin Bieber

“Good Riddance/Time of Your Life” by Green Day

What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?

I hope people learn that there are many sides to any story, depending upon how many people were involved, either directly, or indirectly. I don’t really visualize a perfect reader; just anyone who is trying to navigate a family member’s Alzheimer’s journey, or the abuse by narcissists.

What new writing projects are you currently working on? Or, other projects that are not writing?

I have almost completed my sequel, What Really Happened to Marion and Candace. I’m winding down the family business, so that I can concentrate on doing the things I love, which are writing, and travelling.

How was working with Atmosphere Press? What would you tell other writers who want to publish?

My experience with Atmosphere Press was rewarding, which is why they are publishing my sequel! I encourage people to submit their manuscripts to Atmosphere, because I received support, encouragement, and great advice! I learned much from my experience with Atmosphere Press, as a first-time published author.

Are you a writer, too? Submit your manuscript to Atmosphere Press.
