Retired among the beaches of Florida, Dawn Bragg is an avid reader-turned-author who holds a deep passion for the literary arts. Author of numerous poems and short stories, she is a lifelong advocate for literacy. Dawn devotes her time to creating children’s books that celebrate differences, champion the underdog, and encourage children to find acceptance in others and in oneself. When not writing, Dawn can be found traveling and enjoying the Florida beaches with family and friends.
Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?
The title of my book, Felicia Flamingo and the Florida Friends, actually came to me rather quickly after I developed the main character and the story was written. I simply liked the way the words all seemed to flow together. It’s a tongue twister, however. Try and say it three times fast!
How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?
My illustrator, Sarah Gledhill, did a fabulous job and was able to capture exactly what I envisioned. It was as though she had read my mind! Naturally, I was thrilled when I saw this book in print, as it was exactly as I wanted it to be. The dream was now a reality!
Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?
Throughout my life, I’ve always dabbled in writing short stories, poems, and even some song lyrics. After having been blessed with grandchildren, my attention turned toward creating stories children could enjoy. My late father was a great storyteller, and he had a wonderful ability to write silly, rhyming poems. I’d say that he played a big part in my interest in writing.
What was the most rewarding/meaningful part of publishing your book?
I’d say the most rewarding part of this journey is having my family, friends, and certainly Atmosphere Press, encourage and believe in my ability to craft a story worthy of publication. That’s the stuff in which dreams can come true!
If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?
What a great question! “You’ve Got a Friend” is one that comes to mind. “Lean on Me” would be another great song. “Get Together” is a beautiful song that I would definitely include.
What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?
This may be a children’s story, but I would hope that children and adults alike can see the value of taking a risk and stepping into a different environment, as Felicia did, and be able to find comfort and friendship there. My perfect reader is anyone who enjoys the gift of words!
What new writing projects are you currently working on? Or, other projects that are not writing?
At the moment, I am currently crafting another story for children. This particular one is a bit meatier, with more story and more words. Fun stuff!
How was working with Atmosphere Press? What would you tell other writers who want to publish?
Working with Atmosphere Press was a dream! From the beginning to the end, every person involved with my book was so helpful, kind, and encouraging. It was an easy process, one I did not think achievable until I actually went to print with Atmosphere. My advice to other writers would be to take a deep breath and submit that manuscript. I never guessed I’d be publishing a book at my age, so go on, take that leap of faith! You could be the author of the next bestseller!
Are you a writer, too? Submit your manuscript to Atmosphere Press.
