What inspired you to start writing this book?
Amelia’s Story (my first published book) is my memoir. I penned my story for my daughter, so when she was older she would have a deeper understanding of her mother’s arduous survival journey. It is a story of triumph over adversity.
Describe your dream book cover.
This is a difficult one… One that evokes emotions. A cover once seen and never forgotten. That is my best description. As a writer, I have many book covers myself. Each story requires something quite different from the last. I like unique covers, ones that are not generic or following current trends that fade away over time. Timeless…
If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?
There would be several 70s soundtracks to accompany Amelia’s Story as it set in that time period and upwards into the 80s: Elvis Presley, Beatles, Bee Gees and more!
What books are you reading (for research or comfort) as you continue the writing process?
I read many books for both purposes, and I am currently reading Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. I also have Karin Slaughter’s latest novel lined up to read next. A complete switch, I know!
Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?
Charles Dickens was a great inspiration for me. I discovered his works as a 9/10 year old, and fell in love with his stories. They resonated deeply with me, especially Oliver Twist, a story that was similar to my own, in parts.
Where is your favorite place to write?
My writing room. It’s my haven, my calm space, and looks out onto my garden. It is also mostly evergreen. I love this as my garden is green all year round. This room is where all the magic happens!
Do you have any writing rituals?
I write in pure silence where possible! The only time I break this is when I am writing an emotional scene and I need to get into my emotions to write the scene authentically. So then I will put on a song that will encourage those emotions to surface.
What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?
I hope that readers are inspired by Amelia’s Story as it’s a story of survival against all odds. A story of hope, and determination. A story that I hope inspires others who are, or have been, in similar life situations.
