An Interview with Doc Richter

richter

For a guy who never liked school, I’ve had a lot of it. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree from Berkeley, a Master’s Degree, an MBA, and a Ph.D. All the education was for a career as an international executive.

Writing is a key to my existence and being. I could no longer not write as not breathe. I constantly write and am currently working on another novel.

Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

In my writing, I always know the end of the story before I start, thus the title for Olive Eye was easy. The title refers to the scar of a knife slice down the protagonist’s face, one of many injuries.

How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?

I felt the satisfaction that the novel was finished in every sense of the word and stands on its own.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

I have been writing since I was in grammar school. I am very fortunate to have had support, encouragement, and guidance from a number of published authors.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

I have been an international executive and traveled extensively, which provides a backdrop of reality for my novels.

What was the most rewarding/meaningful part of publishing your book?

The sense of completion.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?

Satisfaction. I hope readers will enjoy the read, empathize with the protagonist, and remember over time key elements of the story and the characters.

The perfect reader is one who loves a good thriller.

What creative projects are you currently working on?

I am currently working on my eighth novel, Gandy Dancer.

How was working with Atmosphere Press? What would you tell other writers who want to publish?

Atmosphere Press was an ideal fit for me. I have gone the traditional publishing route and found that process unnecessarily complex. Atmosphere Press provides everything I need to publish quality stories in a way that allows me to focus on my writing.

The staff I have worked with at Atmosphere is outstanding, many of whom have PhDs. My editor in particular is the best editor I have ever used or met.

I unequivocally recommend Atmosphere Press to any serious writer.
