An Interview with E.J. Mankin

E.J. Mankin is a Queer author from Missouri who writes as a form of resistance to the status quo. Though their works are fantasy, they can be read as allegories of the reality that we live in today.

What inspired you to start writing this book?

I wanted an outlet from the world around me. I just became a new mom and was stuck at home with thoughts of the world that I just brought life into consuming me. The book became my lifeline and I hope it will resonate with many readers and become their escape as well.

Tell us the story of your book’s current title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

The story title came to me in a postpartum haze during a sleepless night. The book became clear in that one moment.

Describe your dream book cover.

My dream book cover has the classic mythology vibes while also looking modern and intriguing. I am drawn to darker colors, specifically maroon. It represents passion and sacrifice to me.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

Nazareth by Sleep Token had a big impact on the themes of this book, so that’s definitely the first song on the track list. Dethrone by Bad Omens; Blood//Water by Grandson; Look To Windward by Sleep Token; Ultraviolet by Spiritbox; The Worst In Me by Bad Omens; Bones of Ours by Max Madly.

What books are you reading (for research or comfort) as you continue the writing process?

The ACOTAR series and the Kingdom of the Wicked series are the books I read before writing my own. The storytelling and themes are something that sparked the way I wanted my book to feel in my mind and have been some of my favorite reads.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

I have a degree in speech-language pathology, so my writing started as clinical reports and research. I also have found a passion in advocating that has followed me into my writing and current work in afterschool programming as a director at Boys and Girls Club. I have always enjoyed telling a story and explaining underlying issues whether that’s in fiction, documenting, or advocacy writing.

Where is your favorite place to write?

My favorite place to write is in my living room when all my kids are asleep, with ambiance videos or sounds on the TV. I get all cozy with a blanket and let my mind wander while I write.

What advice would you give your past self at the start of your writing journey?

The advice I would give my past self at the start of my writing journey would be do not look too far ahead. Do not rush the process, and do not overthink it. What’s meant to come from your book will always be there for you at the end.

What’s one thing you hope sticks with readers after they finish your book?

I hope they choose their own fates despite what society tells them they are meant to become. I hope the spark for change sticks with them and ignites their own journey and purpose.
