My name is Jerome R. McGinn and I was born in Southfield, Michigan. My formative years were shaped by the diverse landscapes and cultures of California, Illinois, Virginia, and Maryland—a journey guided by my father’s service in the United States Navy. This rich mosaic of experiences undoubtedly contributed to my worldview and creative perspective. In 1992, life’s path led me back to my Michigan roots, where I now reside in the Metro-Detroit area as a bachelor. I live near my immediate family, who encourage my artistic pursuits in writing and film.
Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?
My passion for writing was ignited by many influences. Growing up, I was captivated by the enchanting worlds crafted by authors like R.L. Stine, Stephen King, and J.K. Rowling, whose works transported me to realms where imagination knew no bounds. Their ability to write intricate stories with rich characters inspired me to create my narratives and explore the power of storytelling. Additionally, my dad played a pivotal role in nurturing this passion; his enthusiasm for literature was contagious, and he encouraged me to express myself through words without fear or hesitation. Beyond books, art forms like film and music have also shaped my writing style, teaching me the importance of rhythm in prose and the impact of visual imagery in storytelling. These diverse influences have melded together over time, fueling an unyielding enthusiasm for writing that continues to grow with every word I pen.
What inspired you to start writing this book?
During a difficult chapter in my life, I spent nine out of eleven months incarcerated for third-degree child abuse involving my seventeen-year-old son. This is a moment I deeply regret, born from a misunderstanding that left me without the chance to apologize. My heart aches to make amends with all my children and to inspire them, showing them that they can achieve their dreams despite life’s challenges. I’ve poured these hopes into writing this book for young adults everywhere, aiming to help them face their struggles with confidence and resilience. Through these pages, I hope to reconnect with my children and offer them the support they deserve.
Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?
Al Ana’s Curse was a challenging discovery, wrapped in an intense quest for the perfect title. I revised the title three times before finally choosing the name of the demon from folklore. The name “Al Ana” encapsulates the mysterious and sinister allure that the story embodies, enticing readers with a sense of foreboding intrigue. By drawing from folklore, the title not only adds depth to the narrative but also taps into an ancient mythos that resonates with audiences seeking both adventure and authenticity. The process of refining this title was crucial, as it needed to evoke curiosity while hinting at the dark powers within the tale. Ultimately, I felt “Al Ana’s Curse” struck a perfect balance between enigma and clarity, ensuring it captivates potential readers right from the outset.
If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?
This is a cool question because I wrote Midnight Oil’s “Beds Are Burning,” into the book. I would also include Tom Petty’s “Learning to Fly,” and Pete Townsend’s “Let My Love The Door,” because it captures a sense of freedom and self-discovery that resonates deeply with the themes explored in the narrative. The lyrics speak to overcoming obstacles and embracing change, which perfectly complements the journey of the characters.
Describe your dream book cover.
Any book cover that reminds me of a movie poster. The cover of Al Ana’s Curse, designed by Kerry Ellis, is truly captivating and showcases her exceptional talent. Given the stunning result, I am convinced that having her design the covers for my future books will ensure they are equally compelling and visually striking. Her artistic vision is exactly what my projects need to stand out.
What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?
I graduated from Specs Howard School of Media Arts. My initial experience on a movie set was with a short film titled Raised Alone, where I served as a production assistant and later as an extra. Additionally, I interned in the promotions department at 101.1 WRIF for Beasley Media Group Detroit. My work history includes various factory jobs within the corrugated box industry, a position as a machine operator at a steel stamping plant, repairing coffee machines in a shop, working in a plastic injection molding factory, driving a forklift in a warehouse, and laboring in landscaping.
