An Interview with Kerry Brackett

brackett

Kerry Brackett is a renowned writer whose work deeply explores cultural narratives and personal introspection. Originating from Birmingham, AL, his writing is influenced by the city’s rich history and culture. He is the author of acclaimed novels like Shadows at Sundown, The Spirit of Kwanzaa: A Journey, Echoes of the Past, and Light on the Horizon.

What inspired you to start writing this book?

Light on the Horizon was inspired by a desire to explore the enduring impact of history on the present and the power of reconciliation to heal old wounds. The story delves into the complexities of ancestral legacies and the ties that bind families and communities across generations.

The backdrop of a Civil War site provides a poignant setting to examine themes of division and unity, as well as the personal journeys of individuals seeking to understand their roles in the broader narrative of history. The characters’ encounters with the past, both literal and metaphorical, serve as a catalyst for growth and understanding, highlighting the importance of confronting difficult truths to forge a path forward

Tell us the story of your book’s current title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

It was easy to find as it is the summary of the main characters’ journey. They were starting to understand the pillars of what built each environment that they encountered, including that of Light on the Horizon.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

The power of words to evoke emotion, provoke thought, and foster understanding drove me to pursue writing as a means of connecting with others and contributing to cultural dialogues. I have a commitment to storytelling with a firm belief in the transformative potential of literature to bridge divides and inspire change. Through novels and poetry, I want to engage readers with authentic and impactful stories that resonate on both personal and universal levels.

Where is your favorite place to write?

My favorite place to write is somewhere quiet, like my office or a hidden spot in the library. It allows me to fully focus on the story and see what needs to be included to truly let it develop.

What’s one thing you hope sticks with readers after they finish your book?

After reading Light on the Horizon, readers should leave with a profound understanding of the power of reconciliation to bridge divides and heal old wounds. The novel emphasizes that confronting the past—however painful or complex—is essential for personal and collective growth. By facing history’s shadows, we can illuminate the path toward unity and understanding, fostering a sense of hope and empowerment for the future. This message of healing and connection is at the heart of the story, encouraging readers to reflect on their own roles in shaping a more inclusive and harmonious world.
