An Interview with Kristina Byas

byas

Kristina Byas is an emerging poet based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her poetry delves into the intricate maze of human experiences, inviting readers to explore their identity and challenge conventional notions about life and self-expression, with the aspiration to push boundaries to encourage a reevaluation of what it means to show up authentically.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

For me, words have always been a tool I use to heal. I’ve never been content with experiencing my feelings solely in my body or leaving them swirling around in my mind. There’s always been a need to put them down on paper where I can see them and they can make more sense. I’ve found that poetry allows you to sort through your emotions with just a few words, which is perfect because sometimes we don’t have the strength to say more than that.

What inspired you to start writing this book?

My experience as a reader inspired me to start writing this collection. Over the years, I have seen the effect words had on my life when something truly resonated with me, whether I was reading a short story, novel, poem, billboard, or whatever. Words have shown me grace, empowered me, and freed me. I knew I could also offer that to at least one person out there.

Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

Raw was the working title for quite some time because I was exposing myself and sharing these unsettling, scary, and honest thoughts. My writing has been described as punchy because most pieces are fairly straightforward and to the point. I like to think the rawness and intensity are palpable, even if it’s just ten words. However, I wanted the title to have more of an impact and stay true to the purpose of this collection.

I know we all have those fleeting thoughts that make us uncomfortable and even have us questioning our sanity, and through my writing, I aim to give voice to those thoughts, validate them, and show that they’re a natural part of the human experience. Although Intrusive Thoughts wasn’t the first idea I came up with, it was the most fitting.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

I’ve worked as a freelance writer for about a decade, mostly covering personal and business finance. Some might say that sounds boring, but I’ve actually learned quite a bit I can apply to my life.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?

One thing I hope readers take away from reading my book is that although feeling is extremely uncomfortable at times, it’s also where growth and true connection reside. So my perfect reader is someone who’s learning to embrace their feelings and the accompanying discomfort as a pathway to authenticity and fulfillment.
