An Interview with Michael Hemphill

I am a retired software architect living in Mexico. My passions include reading, writing, and composing music.

Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

Mexico’s Finest Murders is a book for the whodunit murder mystery crowd. The title came to me easily, over thirty years ago when I started the book. However, I filed it away for twenty-eight years and only recently discovered it. I can’t give much more info on the title since it will give away a little of the mystery.

How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?

I was fully anticipating an amazing moment, but it was much more than that. I still find it fascinating.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

My wife was and is my biggest influence. She helped me out with some subtle mystery nuances. She is my best supporter.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

I spent forty-two years in the IT industry as consultant and employee. I ran my own small corporation.

What was the most rewarding/meaningful part of publishing your book?

Seeing my words on the page was highly rewarding. I still pinch myself.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

I compose a lot of music so most of the music might be mine. But there would be room for some background mystery music too.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?

I want them to finish it wanting more. I intend to write a sequel someday soon and would love to invite them back.

What creative projects are you currently working on?

I’m always working on music and short stories. I also build websites.

How was working with Atmosphere Press? What would you tell other writers who want to publish?

I found the entire experience very exciting. The professionalism is very high, and the staff is attentive and friendly.
