An Interview with Clare Bursky

Born in Orsk, Russia, in 1944, weighing less than four pounds. My memory goes back to the age of two. Moved to New York at the age of six.

What inspired you to start writing this book?

Since I am the only alive Holocaust survivor of the family, I wanted my nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews to know their family’s history.

Tell us the story of your book’s current title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

My niece Dara helped me select a title. I asked her to help me with the editing of the book.

What books are you reading (for research or comfort) as you continue the writing process?

The One Who Rules by Tanner Owen.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

Educator: taught children and adults how to improve their reading skills in elementary school and college. Educational sales and publishing.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

I decided that I wanted to share the story of survival with my family.

Where is your favorite place to write?

Dining room table.

What advice would you give your past self at the start of your writing journey?

Get a good company who has experience and excellent editors.

What’s one thing you hope sticks with readers after they finish your book?

I want them to realize that all Jews are not rich. They work hard and persevere to make a living. They also encourage their children to become educated. They help other people in need by providing the elderly, widows, and young children with free food if they are in financial need.
