An Interview with J.D. Harbor

harbor

I’m J.D. Harbor, an author who loves crafting heartfelt romance stories filled with self-discovery, second chances, and unforgettable journeys. My debut series, RomantiSea Serenades, brings readers aboard luxurious cruise ships, where love and adventure meet on the open ocean. When I’m not writing, I’m exploring the world, soaking up inspiration, or dreaming about my next story.

What inspired you to start writing this book?

The idea for Emerald Tide and Sapphire Seas came from my love of travel and the unique atmosphere of cruise ships. There’s something so magical about being surrounded by the endless ocean, where every sunset feels like a new beginning. I wanted to capture that sense of adventure and possibility while telling heartfelt stories of love and self-discovery. For me, writing these books was about exploring how stepping away from our everyday lives—whether through travel or introspection—can lead us to rediscover who we truly are and open us up to love in unexpected ways.

Tell us the story of your book’s current title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

The titles for my books have an interesting history. I was originally inspired by my wife and began writing Scarlet Wave, a story loosely based on our own love story. While I eventually shifted focus to Emerald Tide and Sapphire Seas, I decided to keep the oceanic and colorful naming convention for the entire RomantiSea Serenades series. Each title reflects the natural beauty of the sea while symbolizing the unique journeys of the characters in each book.

This theme has become a central part of the series’ identity, tying all the stories together visually and emotionally. And for those wondering—Scarlet Wave is still very much a part of the plan and will be coming in the future!

Describe your dream book cover.

My dream book cover is one that feels like a journey in itself. I envision the covers of the RomantiSea Serenades series as part of a larger panoramic scene, with each book’s cover representing a segment along the side of a luxurious cruise ship. As you progress through the series, the covers would seamlessly connect, creating one continuous illustration that captures the romance and adventure of life at sea.

Each cover would feature illustrated depictions of the main characters, bringing them to life in a way that feels vibrant and engaging. To tie everything together, the series would transition through different bold, ocean-inspired colors—like emerald-green, sapphire-blue, scarlet-red, and gold—almost akin to an Andy Warhol painting. This colorful progression would reflect the emotional and thematic tone of each book, creating a cohesive, eye-catching design that’s as unique as the stories themselves.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

“Better Together” by Jack Johnson

“Where the Boat Leaves From” by Zac Brown Band

“Life Is Better with You” by Michael Franti & Spearhead

“New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra

“I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

Before becoming an author, I worked as a Public Affairs Specialist in the military, where I had the privilege of telling real-life stories from a unique and impactful perspective. I also spent time as a graphic designer, bringing ideas to life visually. Both roles focused on storytelling in different ways, whether through crafting compelling narratives or creating designs that connected with people emotionally.

Where is your favorite place to write?

My favorite place to write is on a cruise ship balcony, surrounded by the soothing sounds of the ocean and breathtaking views—it’s where I feel most inspired. When I’m at home, I love writing in my office, where I’ve surrounded myself with art and mementos from past travels, or out by the pool, where the fresh air helps my creativity flow.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?

One thing I hope readers take away from my books is the importance of self-discovery and personal growth. While the romances are central to the stories, I want readers to see how the characters’ journeys to heal, grow, and embrace who they truly are pave the way for love to flourish. Ultimately, my hope is that readers feel inspired to pursue their own dreams, take chances, and believe in the power of love—not just for others, but for themselves too.
