An Interview with Michele Lyon

An emerging poet drawn to the tender edges of existence—love that lingers, death that reshapes us, and the small, ordinary moments that reveal who we are. A collection of copyrighted poems that form a landscape of heartfelt emotions while stepping into the world of publication.

What inspired you to start writing this book?

The inspiration for this book came from a desire to embrace my authentic self, let my inner light shine, and share a journey of growth, resilience, and self-discovery. Writing has helped me process my life’s greatest triumphs and toughest challenges, giving them purpose and meaning. My hope is that my words encourage others to follow their own North Star.

Tell us the story of your book’s current title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

“Truth Bumps” is a phrase I first heard from a well-known medium during a reading I received. As she spoke, my entire body became covered in goosebumps from head to toe. Smiling, she told me that those weren’t goosebumps but rather truth bumps. She explained that it wasn’t a reaction to any cold weather but a physical response to truth resonating deep within my soul. It was in that moment that I felt a profound clarity and connection. I knew instantly that the title of my poetry collection had been born.

Describe your dream book cover.

I have a clear and unforgettable vivid vision for the cover of my book: a classic San Francisco townhouse at dawn, bathed in the soft light of the morning. Along its ledge sits a row of crows, with one taking flight as another arrives to land. In that single moment, the image captures the circle of life itself, a quiet reminder that every ending creates a space for a new beginning, and that life continues its rhythm and its journey long after we think a chapter has closed.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

“Angel” by Sarah McLaughlin

“Love Me Tender” by Elvis Presley

“Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers

“Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac

“Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison

“Blackbird” by The Beatles

What books are you reading (for research or comfort) as you continue the writing process?

“Let Them” by Mel Robbins and “Guided” by Laura Lynn Jackson.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

I am a Senior Legal Contract Specialist with more than twenty years of experience. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working for incredible companies and building friendships that have lasted a lifetime.

One thing most people don’t know about me is that I love to sing. I’m often a rock star behind the wheel of my car, and if The Voice had existed when I was growing up, I definitely would have mustered up the courage to audition!

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

I began writing in high school as a way to process both the high and low moments in my life. Back then, I dreamed of writing songs and pouring my emotions onto paper. What began as self-expression became a form of healing. Today, my writing fills me with a sense of purpose, allowing me to transform thoughts and experiences into something meaningful. My greatest hope is that by sharing my thoughts and truths, my words might resonate with someone else and touch their soul in a way that enriches their own journey.

Where is your favorite place to write?

My favorite place to write is curled up on my bed in the quiet evening hours, with nothing more than a legal pad and a pen. It’s a space where I can be alone with my thoughts, feelings, and ideas, letting them swirl around in my head until they find their way onto the page.

What advice would you give your past self at the start of your writing journey?

Don’t wait. Pursue your dreams. Take baby steps to get there. Do the work and the rest will follow.

What’s one thing you hope sticks with readers after they finish your book?

I hope that when readers turn the final page, they feel inspired and empowered to have the courage to follow the passion that sets their soul on fire.
