An Interview with Zuzana Plesa

Zuzana grew up in the Bronx, New York, and attended Wagner College, where she earned a BA in history. She earned a master’s degree from Hofstra University and a second master’s degree from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, California. Her studies in Switzerland earned her a diploma as a Jungian analyst. Finally, she received a doctorate in education at the University of West Florida in Pensacola. After living overseas and traveling to many countries, she settled in Niceville, Florida, where she enjoys her garden, house, and peaceful environment.

Tell us the story of your book’s title. Was it easy to find, or did it take forever?

I had kept notes over the years about my life and travels, and I finally put them together in a book entitled Life Stories. The title came rather naturally.

How did it feel when you first saw your book cover? Or when you first held your book in your hands?

I felt accomplished and happy when I first saw my book cover. The cover shows where my life started.

Who/what made you want to write? Was there a particular person, or particular writers/works/art forms that influenced you?

I always kept journals because that was a safe way to release and get in touch with my feelings.

What other professions have you worked in? What’s something about you that your readers wouldn’t know?

I was a teacher, school counsellor, and assistant principal in several overseas schools. After I retired from teaching, I used my counseling skills to see active duty military members.

What was the most rewarding/meaningful part of publishing your book?

The most rewarding part was working with Tammy and hearing her suggestions. I also appreciated the assistance of Megan Sells.

If your book had a soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

La Bamba by Ritchie Valens. I Have a Dream by ABBA.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from reading your book? How do you envision your perfect reader?

Looking for your place of belonging and home is within you, so take time to meditate and reflect.

What creative projects are you currently working on?

I like Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and I would like to write a fiction novel with a strong character.

How was working with Atmosphere Press? What would you tell other writers who want to publish?

I really appreciated working with Atmosphere Press because they make helpful suggestions yet they allow your own creativity to flourish.
