Packages

The amount of publicity support is the biggest difference between the packages. All packages will get you a beautifully designed and edited book that is globally distributed. Beyond that, each package includes ever-more in terms of the help you’ll get in making your book have an impact in the world. Luckily, all higher packages include everything from lower packages, so you don’t have to worry about missing out. Here’s a quick rundown of each package:
 
Essential: everything you need to bring a beautiful book to market: editorial, design, distribution.
 
Premium: add hardcover and editorial reviews to amplify the prestige of your book
 
Flagship: really make your mark with Kirkus, hosted readings, paid ads, and other perks to ensure a big debut
 
Enterprise: the best of the best, including such star features as social media agency services, a custom author website, a professionally narrated audiobook, and 4x the ad spend 
This is a great question, and we always want people to choose what’s going to work best for them, both in terms of their goals and their budget. Ask yourself: what do I want? If you want everything for your book, go Enterprise. If you don’t really care about publicity or you can do it on your own, or you have a tighter budget, do Essential. For our part, we put those dashes around Flagship because we think it’s a great value, and will give you an amazing experience, and your book a great shot at making noise. In the end, the decision is yours, and if you want help determining which package is best for you, we’re here to help. 30% choose Flagship, 20% choose Premium, and 45% choose Essential. In other words, a good mix! Enterprise is invite-only due to the depth of the relationship and amount of services provided, so only 5% of authors receive Enterprise. 

Enterprise is truly the best of the best, offering more at that price point than any other publisher on the market. We haven’t seen a greater package in terms of both services provided and the value you get. Enterprise involves working together for likely more than a year on extensive promotion beyond even the excellent Flagship level. Because it includes high-impact add-ons like an audiobook, an author website, and social media agency services, the investment is substantial. For what you get, though, it’s a bargain, at a cost significantly lower than high-priced competition who does less for more money. In terms of it being invite-only, because it includes such a deep long-term relationship, we need to make sure that only the most skillful and personally invested authors take on such a partnership. We owe it to both you and us to make sure it’s going to be a good idea to work so much together. If you’d like to be considered for an Enterprise invitation, please let us know.

Absolutely. More than 50% of our authors choose Essential or Premium, and our best-selling author of all time was on Essential, so it’s a great place to be. Although Flagship and Enterprise undoubtedly give you more sales support, authors with an existing network and ambitious marketing plan can make a big impact even at Premium and Essential levels. Thinking beyond sales, both Essential and Premium will get you a beautifully designed and edited book, inside and out, and you’ll also be able to take advantage of our expertise throughout the process. Making beautiful books that our authors love is where our heart has always been, and you get that love with every package.
We used to allow this, but honestly, it didn’t work well. It led to confusion, crossed wires, misaligned expectations, and authors who were less happy. So now we require that authors choose one of the four packages above. Trust us: it’s better this way.

Pricing

Great question! The main differentiator between the higher and lower costs is the amount of publicity and promotion provided. The lower-cost Essential gives you everything you need to have an excellent book, and the higher the cost/package, the more publicity you’re going to get: reviews, readings, NetGalley campaigns, newsletter exposure, paid ads, etc. Also factoring in are the products included, as cost goes up when you add hardcover and audiobook versions, which can require a good bit of investment. At the highest cost level, you even receive social media agency services and a custom-built and hosted author website, both of which can be extremely expensive when purchased independently.
Atmosphere Press historically has been in the middle of the price range compared to other hybrid publishers. Some companies charge far more because they are writing the book for their client; we don’t ghostwrite, because our mission is to serve real writers who wrote their own books. Some other companies charge far more for the same or lesser services than what we provide, but we’ve always had an imperative to make publishing as financially approachable for people as possible. We aren’t owned by private equity, or a venture capital firm trying to maximize profits. Instead, we are owned and operated by writers and other people who love books and writing. There are companies who are cheaper than us, and some of them do excellent work, especially in the self-publishing space. Do beware, though, of “too good to be true” situations. Our advice is to carefully compare contracts and what exactly you’re getting for your investment, and then make the decision that’s best for you.
As in most industries, prices in publishing have gone up over the years. Our prices usually increase about ten percent per year, with new pricing going into effect every April. Important to note is that every time there is a price increase, we also increase value by enriching the quality and number of services provided by each package. We always want to level up what we’re offering, so that you’re always impressed by how much you receive for your investment.
There are zero mandatory or hidden costs beyond what is listed above. It’s important to us that you have that kind of cost transparency. That said, many authors do want to purchase copies of their book for personal use or sale, or go on a book tour, or have tables at book festivals or conferences. Other authors hire an outside PR firm, or put money into additional advertising initiatives. There are plenty of things you can do, but you can rest assured that Atmosphere Press won’t hit you with unexpected bills along the way.
You are free to make payments as you see fit, with no interest or extra charge to you. We don’t provide “financing,” per se, but because payments are entirely at your discretion, there’s no substantial need for financing—you can just pay as you go. The only caveat is that we don’t start a project until the first 1/3 of the contract total is paid in full, we don’t advance the project to interior design until the second 2/3 is paid, and we don’t send the book to the printer until the whole contract is fully paid. Those milestones give you payment flexibility, and also encourage us to be timely with your project, because we aren’t due the second and third payment until we move your book to the next milestone.

Process

This is so you don’t have the burden of paying the full contract amount up front, and also so we are encouraged to move your book efficiently from one step of that process to the next. That’s because the second payment isn’t due until your book is past editorial and proofreading and is ready for interior design, and the third payments isn’t due until your book is 100% complete and ready to send to the printer. This “milestone” setup allows you to budget more carefully, and also keeps things moving ahead nicely. It also means that the payments aren’t strictly time-based, because they are due not at arbitrary dates, but only when your book is ready for a new stage in the process. We moved to this three-installments system about six years ago and it’s worked really well for both authors and us.
Atmosphere Press is indeed selective, so it’s not possible to receive one of these packages without first going through our selection process. We have an obligation to our existing authors to protect the brand name of their publisher, which means we can only publish excellent writing. We also only work with people who will be a good match for what we do. We don’t want an unhappy author! It has to be a win-win situation, and you can read more about our selection process here.
We understand that hybrid publishing isn’t for everyone. If you’re someone who wants a traditional contract, or who wants to self-publish, then we aren’t the right fit for you. We also aren’t the right fit for someone who wants us to write the book for them, or someone who does not want to be involved in the process of bringing your book to life. We are a publisher that serves real writers, and we hope that’s you!
Absolutely! We’re dedicated to being the most honest and transparent publishing company out there, so our publication contract is public. We are one of the most efficient publishers out there, so we won’t dawdle. Many of our authors go from Day 1 of the process to a printed copy of the book in their hands in 6-9 months, with a publication date within a year. But many of our authors also want to take their time in the editorial or design process, for example, and we don’t rush them through. We always say “better a good book than a fast one,” so we do encourage authors not to hurry through the process too hastily. In terms of publication date and publicity, we’ll work with you collaboratively on setting a publication date that works for you and gives your book the best chance to succeed.
