Packages
What is the main difference between the packages?
The amount of publicity and format support is the biggest difference between the packages. All packages will get you a beautifully designed and edited book that is globally distributed. Beyond that, each package includes ever-more in terms of the help you’ll get in making your book have an impact in the world. Luckily, all higher packages include everything from lower packages, so you don’t have to worry about missing out. Here’s a quick rundown of each package:
Essential: everything you need to bring a beautiful book to market: editorial, design, distribution.
Flagship: really make your mark with Kirkus, hosted readings, paid ads, hardcover, and other perks to ensure a big debut
Enterprise: the best of the best, including such star features as social media agency services, a custom author website, a professionally narrated audiobook, and 5x the ad spend
Which package should I choose?
This is a great question, and we always want people to choose what’s going to work best for them, both in terms of their goals and their budget. Ask yourself: what do I want? If you want to make the biggest impact for your book, go Enterprise. If you don’t really care about publicity or you can do it on your own, or you have a tighter budget, do Essential. We put those dashes around Flagship because it’s a proven middle ground of exceptional production and real-impact promotion support. In the end, the decision is yours, and if you want help determining which package is best for you, we’re here to help. What package do other authors choose?
10% of our books are produced at the Enterprise level, while 40% choose Flagship and 50% choose Essential. In other words, a good mix, and we’ll work hand-in-hand with you to help you find the package that suits your circumstances and needs best.
Why is Enterprise much more expensive than the other packages? Why is it invite-only?
Enterprise is our most expansive publishing partnership, built for authors with exceptional books, meaningful platform potential, or especially ambitious goals for reach and visibility. Along with everything in Flagship, Enterprise includes major brand and promotion assets like an audiobook, author website, cinematic trailer, expanded advertising, and additional strategic and social media support. Because this package involves a deeper, longer-term collaboration, it is offered selectively to projects that are the right fit. Interested in Enterprise? Can my book be successful at the Essential level?
Absolutely. 50% of our authors choose Essential and our best-selling author of all time was on Essential, so it’s a great place to be. Although Flagship and Enterprise undoubtedly give you more sales support, authors with an existing network and ambitious marketing plan can make a big impact even at the Essential level. Thinking beyond sales, Essential will get you a beautifully designed and edited book, inside and out, and you’ll also be able to take advantage of our expertise throughout the process. Making beautiful books that our authors love is where our heart has always been, and you get that love with every package.
Can I build a custom package choosing pieces and parts of other packages?
We used to allow this, but honestly, it didn’t work well. It led to confusion, crossed wires, misaligned expectations, and authors who were less happy. So now we require that authors choose one of the packages above. Trust us: it’s better this way.
Pricing
What factors make the cost higher/lower?
Great question! The main differentiator between the higher and lower costs is the amount of publicity and premium services provided. The lower-cost Essential gives you everything you need to have an excellent book, and the higher the cost/package, the more features you’re going to get: reviews, readings, NetGalley campaigns, newsletter exposure, paid ads, etc. Also factoring in are the products included, as cost goes up when you add hardcover and audiobook versions of your book, social media agency services, and a custom-built and hosted author website. All of those can be costly when purchased independently, but are received more cost-effectively when part of one of our packages.
How do these prices compare to the competition? Why are some companies so expensive and other companies are so cheap?
Atmosphere Press historically has been in the middle of the price range compared to other hybrid publishers. Some companies charge far more because they are writing the book for their client; we don’t ghostwrite, because our mission is to serve real writers who wrote their own books. Some other companies charge far more for the same or lesser services than what we provide, but we’ve always had an imperative to make publishing as financially approachable for people as possible. We aren’t owned by private equity, or a venture capital firm trying to maximize profits. Instead, we are owned and operated by writers and other people who love books and writing. There are companies who are cheaper than us, and some of them do excellent work, but they are more in the self-publishing space than true hybrid publishers who stand behind your book. Do beware, though, of “too good to be true” situations. Our advice is to carefully compare contracts and what exactly you’re getting for your investment, and then make the decision that’s best for you.
How have these prices changed historically?
As in most industries, prices in publishing have gone up over the years. Our prices usually increase about ten percent per year, with new pricing going into effect every April. Important to note is that every time there is a price increase, we also increase value by enriching the quality and number of services provided by each package. We always want to level up what we’re offering, so that you’re always impressed by how much you receive for your investment.
Are there other costs I should budget for? Anything hidden?
There are zero mandatory or hidden costs beyond what is listed above. It’s important to us that you have that kind of cost transparency. That said, many authors do want to purchase copies of their book for personal use or sale, or go on a book tour, or have tables at book festivals or conferences. Other authors hire an outside PR firm, or put money into additional advertising initiatives. There are plenty of things you can do, but you can rest assured that Atmosphere Press won’t hit you with unexpected bills along the way.
Do you have a financing or payment plan?
You are free to make payments as you see fit, with no interest or extra charge to you. We don’t provide “financing,” per se, but because payments are entirely at your discretion, there’s no substantial need for financing—you can just pay as you go. The only caveat is that we don’t start a project until the first 1/3 of the contract total is paid in full, we don’t advance the project to interior design until the second 2/3 is paid, and we don’t send the book to the printer until the whole contract is fully paid. Those milestones give you payment flexibility, and also encourage us to be timely with your project, because we aren’t due the second and third payment until we move your book to the next milestone.

Process
Why three installments? When are they due?
This is so you don’t have the burden of paying the full contract amount up front, and also so we are encouraged to move your book efficiently from one step of that process to the next. That’s because the second payment isn’t due until your book is past editorial and proofreading and is ready for interior design, and the third payments isn’t due until your book is 100% complete and ready to send to the printer. This “milestone” setup allows you to budget more carefully, and also keeps things moving ahead nicely. It also means that the payments aren’t strictly time-based, because they are due not at arbitrary dates, but only when your book is ready for a new stage in the process. We moved to this three-installments system about six years ago and it’s worked really well for both authors and us.
Wait, is Atmosphere Press selective or not? Can anyone buy one of these packages?
Atmosphere Press is indeed selective, so it’s not possible to receive one of these packages without first going through our selection process. We have an obligation to our existing authors to protect the brand name of their publisher, which means we can only publish excellent writing. We also only work with people who will be a good match for what we do. We don’t want an unhappy author! It has to be a win-win situation, and you can read more about our selection process here.
Who is *not* a good fit for Atmosphere Press?
We understand that hybrid publishing isn’t for everyone. If you’re someone who wants a traditional contract, or who wants to self-publish, then we aren’t the right fit for you. We also aren’t the right fit for someone who wants us to write the book for them, or someone who does not want to be involved in the process of bringing your book to life. We are a publisher that serves real writers, and we hope that’s you!
Do you have a publishing contract I can read?
Absolutely! We’re dedicated to being the most honest and transparent publishing company out there, so our publication contract is public. We believe it’s the fairest in the industry, with clear deliverables and authors retaining 100% rights over their work and 90% royalties. You can read the whole thing here!
How long will it take to publish my book?
We are one of the most efficient publishers out there, so we won’t dawdle. Our ideal timeline for a book is to go from Day 1 of the production process to a printed copy of the book in your hands in 6 months, with a publication date 3 months later. We’ll try to hit those marks, but we understand that some authors want to take their time in the editorial or design process, and we don’t rush them through. We always say “better a good book than a fast one,” so we do encourage authors not to hurry through the process too hastily. In terms of exact publication date and publicity, we’ll work with you collaboratively on setting a publication date that works for you and gives your book the best chance to succeed.
Really, is it worth it?
